You have been sent by time machine (invented by Leonardo da Vinci's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandchild) to Europe in 1550 CE to determine whether the the clues left in da Vinci's old studio mean anything. Unfortunately for you, the supposed clues left by Leo are all on various objects that were common of the time. May 26: The Ugly Side of the Reformation

I hope you had a great Memorial Day Weekend! I posted your study guide for a test Friday. That is due Thursday.

Check this out: The Reformation was supposed to be a way for devoted Christians to practice Christianity the way they wanted as they saw flaws with Catholicism. There were certain places that responded extremely harsh and others followed suit! ::wow::

May 21: The effect of the Spread of the Reformation and Counter Reformation

Obviously, many people feared the Church and were afraid to break apart. The Church realized there was a lot of turmoil and decided they needed to change things to bring the former Catholics back to Catholicism. This is called the Counter Reformation. Check out the maps to see the damage that the Reformation did to the Catholic Church and then see how the Church responded.

Due:

May 18: The Start of the Reformation and Martin Luther

We learned that the Renaissance really sparked many people to think outside of the box and challenge the knowledge and beliefs that people had of the time.
The next Unit that we learn about, the Reformation, can 100% be tied in as an affect of the Renaissance. A German monk by the name of Martin Luther (NOT MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.!!!) wrote a document called the 95 Theses that challenged the actions of the Catholic Church, the largest and most important aspect of life in Europe during the Middle Ages!
So, during this unit, we will learn about Martin Luther and the impact the Reformation has on the rest of Europe.... and the world today.

Check out the doc and the reading that goes with it. Answer the few questions that follow. Feel free to Rap to the song after you finish

*If there is not an author, can you really trust text that someone would not take credit for writing? NO!
*Wikipedia is not a good source BUT they have a list of sources they use at the bottom that are annotated with the text. Those sources might be more reputable... check them out!

Due:

April 23: Raphael in Google Classroom

April 23: Raphael

Over the course of the next couple weeks, we will look at a series of famous Renaissance thinkers (artists, writers, politicians, scientists, etc.).

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are named after four Renaissance artists- Leonardo (da Vinci), Michelangelo (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni), Donatello (Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi), and Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino).

We will be taking a look at Raphael today. In the doc below, you will find a few links to explain a couple of his master pieces, the School of Athens and the Sistine Madonna. The Sistine Madonna is the sacred name Christians give to Jesus' mother. You will see that she is portrayed time and time again. You may also be wondering why Renaissance artists are painting or sculpting a religious figure when they were supposed to be portraying secular scenes. The answer to that thought is this: although the people in these paintings may be religious figures, they are illustrated in a human-like, realistic style. The artists tried to express emotion of these people rather than glorify the fact that they are important to religion.

Due:

April 21: Cradle of the Renaissance in Google Classroom

Using TCI Lesson 28 Sections Introduction- Advancements in sculpture, learn how certain city-states in Italy helped propel thinking into a new and innovative way. Through classical periods of influence, Italians in the Renaissance were inspired and reinvented the wheel to inspire others. This era would bring Europe out of the Dark Ages in into the Modern World.

Due:

April 6-8: Renaissance Art Recreation in Google Classroom

April 6-8: Renaissance Art Recreation

Last week we learned about how the Renaissance started: The growth in trade brings more money and goods to Europe. Merchants and bankers become newly rich and spend their extra money as patrons of the arts (paintings, sculptures, scientific studies, architecture, poetry, literature, philosophy, and much more).

Over the next 3 days, you are going to work on recreating a popular Renaissance art piece. You MUST select one of the paintings in the slideshow attached.
Today, you will do background research on a piece of artwork that you are selecting.
Tuesday, you will turn yourself into the Renaissance Artwork by designing and creating the art. Pay close attention to the characteristics of Renaissance art (perspective, humanism, etc.) and do your best to re-create it and take of picture to document it. Try to match colors and styles as much as you can but also, be creative to make this work. Attach the picture in the google slide show, as well as your research responses to the questions.
On Wednesday, we will take a look at some of your classmates pictures and vote on our favorites!

Due:

April 2: Introduction to the Renaissance in Google Classroom

April 2: Introduction to the Renaissance

Looking at TCI in the introduction, sections 1 and 2, complete the form to the best of your ability.
These sections refresh what we learned about the Crusades and the Middle Ages and explain how the economy in Italy made the Renaissance happen. So where we saw the negative aspects of trade in the Black Plague, the Renaissance shows the positive side that comes out of a globalized network of trading and sharing ideas. Today, we will take a look at how merchants and bankers started to become wealthy and helped spark the Renaissance.

Due:

April 1st: Geographical Introduction to the Renaissance in Google Classroom

April 1st: Geographical Introduction to the Renaissance

Use the Nystrom Atlas of World History to complete this assignment. Use the help doc below if you need help finding something on the map, understanding the question or understanding a concept.

March 26: Comparing the Magna Carta to the U.S. Constitution in Google Classroom

March 26: Comparing the Magna Carta to the U.S. Constitution

As you learned briefly yesterday, the Magna Carta was a document forced upon King John I of England. What this eventually set up was a constitutional monarchy in England but more importantly was that it limited the power of the King. Future documents, such as the Constitution would use the Magna Carta to model modern law.

Read the two short articles on the Magna Carta within the Magna Carta and U.S. Constitution doc. Then, on the Comparing the Magna Carta and U.S. Constitution doc, follow the directions to complete the chart.

Due:

March 25: Magna Carta and the Hundred Years War (1337–1453 CE) in Google Classroom

March 25: Magna Carta and the Hundred Years War (1337–1453 CE)

Do Now: Watch the Brain Pop on the Magna Carta (1215 CE) and complete the document below.

Follow along the Edpuzzle video with your TCI textbook (Lesson 5 Section 3) about the Hundred Years War. The video will stop to ask questions that require you to listen and follow along. I suggest split screening the video and the TCI textbook so you can follow along and refer back to the text.

Your TCI textbook can be accessed by clicking the google apps menu on the top right of a google website. Scroll all the way down until you find TCI. It will bring you to the single sign in to get into the textbook.

Task:
Follow along the Edpuzzle video and answer the questions at each pause. They are similar to the TCI questions so when the video pauses, you can answer the questions in TCI for the Hundred Years War as well.

Then read about the "Trials of Joan of Arc" (Lesson 5, Section Reading Further). At the bottom are 3 questions. You only have to answer the first two questions. Check the rubric to self evaluate your questions.

Due:

March 23: Explaining the Crusades in Google Classroom

March 23: Explaining the Crusades

Last week, we learned about one of the few ways that feudalism started to break apart in Europe, the Black Plague. This week we will learn how the Crusades and the Hundred Years War also caused feudalism to break apart.

Use the web quest to uncover information about the Crusades. If the video in the first link does not work, try this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No6n4kavrTw

We will have our first Virtual Assessment (quiz) on Friday. There will be a review guide (by tomorrow) and a game that you will able to do on your own. The material will cover from the beginning of Feudalism up through the Hundred Years War (Wednesday).

1-How did the Black Plague affect the population of Europe? What disadvantages does this have? Are their any advantages to the Black Plague?
2-At the time, Arabia was by far more advanced than Europe was in the fields of mathematics, science, and economics. By the year 1500, Europe became more advanced. How did the Black Plague affect the length of time it took Europe to "catch up"?
3-Just as feudalism was declining because peasants moved to towns and cities, Europe faced this devastation. What would your mindset have been if you were a peasant living on a manor considering moving to a city during or after the plague?

DON'T FORGET TO DO THE ACHIEVE 3000 ARTICLE AFTER ("UNDERSTANDING THE BLACK DEATH")

Due:

March 19: Black Plague Interview-- READ THE DIRECTIONS BELOW!! in Google Classroom

March 19: Black Plague Interview-- READ THE DIRECTIONS BELOW!!

On the first page of the google form "Black Plague Interview", there is a short reading about the Black Plague. Answer the two questions that follow.

This is where it gets tricky!

On the second page of the form, there are excerpts from a primary source of a survivor of the Bubonic Plague (no, he's not still alive and no I don't know him). In the text box below the excerpt, construct a question that would allow for the response that you just read. Hint: When you discover the main idea, the development of a question is much easier. Try to be as detailed and elaborate as possible.

Read and answer the questions.
Follow the directions on the google form to create an interview about the Bubonic Plague.
Think about these questions if you have time to watch the last clip “What if the plague never happened”:

-How did the Black Plague affect the population of Europe? What disadvantages does this have? Are their any advantages to the Black Plague?
-At the time, Arabia was by far more advanced than Europe was in the fields of mathematics, science, and economics. By the year 1500, Europe became more advanced. How did the Black Plague affect the length of time it took Europe to "catch up"?
-Just as feudalism was declining because peasants moved to towns and cities, Europe faced this devastation. What would your mindset have been if you were a peasant living on a manor considering moving to a city during or after the plague?

Then watch the clip as a class and see if your theories match what is theorized in the video clip.
