Welcome to Engineering & Design
My name is Mrs. Macfarlane. I have had the pleasure of teaching in Marlboro for many years. Previously, I have taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade sciences both mainstream and honors. I graduated from Rutgers University with a concentration in Biology and Environmental Sciences.
I was very excited when the district decided to offer another science class! This class, Engineering and Design, allows students to be engaged in the application of the sciences while following the Next Generation Science Standards. The class is an extension of the student's current science class. In other words, if a student is in 6th grade and is learning Earth Science, this class will complement that curriculum. Classes like Engineering and Design are often referred to as STEM classes but I prefer STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.
Students are presented with real world problems. These challenges allow the students to explore various solutions. Using craft materials along with computer programs, students will follow the engineering process to design and build devices with specific functions based on given constraints and criteria. Students evaluate and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each design solution and discuss possible modifications for redesign purposes.
I look forward to an amazing semester with you.
